Fund Investments

T he Directors of the American Gift Fund oversee the investment of all of the charity's assets in compliance with principles of fiduciary responsibility. They have created investment portfolios which are utilized to pursue one of three investment objectives: Growth, Total Return or Preservation. Donors may recommend that their accounts be invested in accordance with any one of the three, but they may not participate in ongoing decisions about management of the portfolio assets.

Because future grant recommendations may include appreciation in the value of an account, donors should consider the timing of future grants when making their recommendations about investment objectives. If you wish to maximize the amount of contributions over a longer period of time, the Growth objective may be most appropriate. On the other hand, if you expect to recommend grants in a few years after your gift, the Preservation objective may be the best alternative. And for gradual but steady grants over time, the Total Return objective probably offers the best fit.

  • The Growth Objective seeks long-term growth of capital by investing in a diversified portfolio of common stocks and securities convertible into such stocks across the market capitalization and growth spectrums, including prudent exposure to international markets, or in mutual funds primarily holding such stocks and securities.
  • The Total Return Objective seeks steady growth by combining holdings in the Growth Portfolio with the Preservation Portfolio.
  • The Preservation Objective seeks to preserve value and obtain a reasonable level of current income by investing in corporate and U.S. government obligations or in mutual funds primarily holding such obligations.

As an alternative, if your account is worth at least $1 million, you may ask the Gift Fund to engage an investment advisory firm you recommend as investment advisor for the assets in your account. Based on standards the Directors have developed, they will determine whether or not to hire the adviser. For more information, please call the Gift Fund, or have your financial adviser call, at 800-240-4248 or e-mail the Gift Fund at info@giftfund.org.
